A domain transfer and a website migration are separate processes. A domain can move to another registrar while the website, DNS and email remain where they are. Treating these layers separately prevents an administrative transfer from causing unnecessary downtime.
What changes during a transfer?
The registrar manages registration and renewal. Nameservers determine where the DNS zone lives. Hosting and email then use records from that zone. A transfer need not change nameservers unless you deliberately choose to do so.
Verify ownership and contact details
Ensure registrant details are correct and approval mail can be received. Check the expiry date, transfer lock and registry-specific rules. Share an authorisation code only with the intended new registrar.
Create a complete DNS inventory
Export A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, CAA and verification records. Record DNSSEC and DS information separately. If nameservers remain unchanged, the zone normally continues answering. If they move too, build and compare the new zone before switching.
DNSSEC requires planning
An old DS record combined with unrelated new DNSSEC keys can make the domain unreachable for validating resolvers. Coordinate removing, adding or rotating DS records with the nameserver migration. See DNS, nameservers and DNSSEC explained.
Keep website and email online
Keep existing hosting active until the transfer and any DNS changes are confirmed. Test the site and mailboxes externally. Retain old mail servers while caches may use the previous MX answer. For a full hosting move, follow our zero-downtime migration guide.

Will the website go offline?
Not when nameservers and hosting remain functional. Downtime usually follows simultaneous, unprepared DNS changes.
Does my mailbox transfer automatically?
No. Mailbox data belongs to hosting, not the domain registration.
Can I transfer just before expiry?
It may be risky because of processing time and registry rules. Begin well in advance.
